Many years ago I heard an American colleague say in a sermon, “On a sunny day in Scotland it often rains.” Of late I feel that is all that it has done – at least the rain part! The preacher was a colleague who was to later become a firm friend. The ministry of my friend has often intersected with my own ministry over the past 2 decades and more, through our common bond of faith in Christ. His story and my story are connected to that larger divine story – His story – the story of Jesus Christ – a story that binds us all together in Christ in the Christian Church.
In a few weeks, we will all have the opportunity to reconnect to that larger divine story – His story – the story of Jesus Christ. As the poet Ann Weems puts it…
“This Advent let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that the Lord has made known to us. In the midst of shopping sprees let’s ponder in our hearts the Gift of Gifts. Through the tinsel let’s look for the gold on the Christmas Star.In the excitement and confusion, in the merry chaos, let’s listen for the brush of angels’ wings. This Advent, let’s go to Bethlehem and find our kneeling places.”
